Connect Models to Retrieval Layers

During my personal research, I decided to test Google Gemini to see how it handled niche technical topics such as agent-to-agent communication. I began with what seemed like a simple fact-checking task. I pasted a short passage describing three communication protocols: A2A from Google, ANP (Agent Network Protocol), and ACP from IBM, and asked Gemini to check the accuracy of that information.

The response came back with complete confidence: "These protocols are fictional. While the concepts are valid, the specific named protocols from these companies do not exist."

The problem was that Gemini was wrong. At least one of those protocols actually exists. The model had confidently rejected true information, showing that hallucinations are not only about inventing facts but can also involve confidently denying real ones.

This experience was a perfect example of how hallucinations occur in large language models. When a model encounters a topic that is underrepresented in its training data, it tries to fill in the gaps with patterns that sound plausible. Gemini did not intend to mislead; it simply generalized from incomplete knowledge, producing something that felt correct but was not.

The best technique I have found to prevent this is to make the model verify information before it answers. I call it a "grounded response mode," which means connecting the model to a retrieval layer such as RAG or a web search and asking it to cite at least one credible source before forming a response.

Since adopting that approach, I have seen a significant reduction in hallucinations. It is a small but powerful shift that helps AI move from guessing confidently to checking consciously.
