They just released a brand-new feature in public beta called In-Function Concurrency. Basically, it allows you to run functions concurrently to save on function cost.

We were pleased to see that once we turned it on, we got an immediate 20% decrease in function duration globally, which saves us thousands of dollars a month.

Previous to this, our biggest line item was image optimization in Vercel. We wondered why because we don't have that many images on our website. After investigating, we found out that it was optimizing every new tiny user avatar that is uploaded when a user signs up with Google. With over 1 million new sign-ups every month, this adds up quickly.

This image is only shown in two places on our entire site. We were able to set these images to not be optimized in Vercel, which also saved us thousands of dollars a month. Of course, Google avatar images are already heavily optimized, so there was really no trade-off here.
